Final Tuesday and Wednesday of 2009

Tuesday
Was up as usual to see to brats and have my coffee outside. The garden was looking great after the rain which was a godsend - perfect timing with all the new plants put in yesterday. Hubby left for Alberton where he spent the morning going to several friends as well as popping in to see Faizel who had a bad fall on Sunday afternoon resulting in seven stitches on his chin. Diane and I spent our morning tidying, dusting and vacuuming. Boring! But at least the place is presentable for the start of 2010.After lunch we popped into Meyerton to get the printer ink refilled. The place was rather busy and said it would be nearly an hour before it would be done. Diane had some Oz pics to develop so we decided to quickly go into Alberton to drop them off and be back before the ink place closed. We got to Kodak and after putting the pics through the machine (303 of them) were informed they would take an hour. Deciding it would be silly to rush back to Meyerton and return for the pics later or even the next day we stopped at Tremontis for our dose of ice cream. What a disappointment! Since our last visit they have dropped in quality. The ice cream was just like crunching ice with very little flavor. After that was finished we did some shopping and then wandered around the shops. Went back to the Kodak only to find the machine had run out of ink and the pics weren’t ready. Only another 30 mins. We wandered around some more after putting the shopping in the car. It was a very hot day and humid after the rain so we were rather parched now and went into the bottle store for something cold. While we drank it and to pass the time we stopped and looked at all the fancy bottles of booze on display in the locked cabinets on the way out. There were some stunning bottles of whiskey, cognac, liqueurs and others. Some of the bottles were real show pieces at incredible prices. We went back to the Kodak – still trying to sort out the machine – another 20 mins. We decided to go and sit in the car. Luckily I had a magazine in the car and started to read it. Diane went back in at about ten past five while I carried on reading. At twenty to six I gave up waiting for her and went in to look for her. They were only just finishing off the last few pics and while waiting Diane had been checking the pics already printed. We finally left at six. Hubby was home and having a snooze when we got back. We had a shandie outside chilling for awhile until the mozzies became unbearable. After a light supper we watched TV and had our Milo.
Wednesday
I was up for my chill time as usual. I felt half asleep so had my second as I finished the first. Felt more than ready to face the day after that. After breakfast Hubby got the deke out as we wanted to give it a run. We left about nine going the scenic route through Henley-on-Klip to Deneysville. Hubby had been told about a newly opened Motorbike Museum there. We arrived just after ten. I was surprised at the amount of visitors to the museum which was very interesting. There was a section on the TT races on the Isle of Mann as well as old bike racing legends. A fair amount of the legends were Rhodesians. Hubby was thrilled to see his friend, Lofty Pretorius’s bike which is on loan to the museum for six months. The bike is a very rare 1954 Jawa which he has completely restored – a project that took many years. After we had been through the museum we wandered over to the restaurant attached to the place. Hubby had a shandie while Diane and I decided to be adventurous and we had a spiced gold and coke. Very Nice! We asked the barman for a menu and were informed a board would be put out at half twelve with the lunch menu. The place looked good so we decided to wait for lunch. Mistake! When the menu came out we settled for steak and chips. There were no vegetarian dishes so Hubby ordered Diane chips and a salad. The waitress asked if she would also like mushrooms which was ordered. The food took a fair time to come. The steaks for tasty and very tender. The chips were fair but Diane found the salad unpleasant and the mushroom terrible. After I had eaten I decided to taste her mushroom as I couldn’t believe it was that bad. I bit into it and immediately spat it out. The thing was rubbery and actually tasted perfumed. Needless to say we didn’t even bother having coffee after the meal. We left and headed for Vereeniging to have a coffee and cake. On the way there we had a phone call inviting us to spend two days in the Pilansberg. We accepted and are off tomorrow morning. When we stopped at the Three Rivers Shopping Centre Diane and I went into to get supplies for the two days. We spotted an ice cream parlour and decided to cool off with some instead of coffee and cake. I had three scoops –black cherry and brandy liqueur, coffee and pecan nut and hazel nut. It was absolutely delicious. Diane had the same except chocolate instead of the hazel nut. We sat on a bench and chilled while we ate it, deciding that in future we would go there for our ice cream treat. After shopping we got three scoops for Hubby.( He had stayed near the car as he didn’t want anyone driving off with his favourite car).We arrived back home around four and after unloading the car had a coffee and waffles in our favourite spot. I cooked supper and then put potato on to make a salad to take with. We have had our milo and Diane has gone to bed. I must just finish the potato salad and then I’m off to bed.Cheers for now. I will do the next blog when we are back letting you know how our New Year in the Pilansberg went.
To all of you. Have a fabulous New Year and may 2010 be full of happiness and prosperity

Last Sunday & Monday of 2009

On Sunday morning Hubby was his usual wonderful self bringing breakfast in bed. Unfortunately this happened at seven as he thought it was Monday morning. It was a beautiful day again so it was not a hardship being up early. After eating I got up and had a second coffee chilling in my spot under the trees. The garden was really looking good after the rain we had overnight. There were a lot of birds around singing in the trees and I felt good sitting there in my little piece of paradise. After all the gallivanting and chilling of the last few days I thought I should make an effort and clear the washing. I did several loads in-between doing some cleaning and tidying. I didn’t overdo things and also spent time reading. I am currently reading ` Once in a Lifetime’ by Cathy Kelly. It is the first book I have read of hers and I am finding it excellent reading. I intend looking in the library to see if they have anything written by her. I love reading and ever since a kid have been a book worm. When I am engrossed in a book I notice nothing going on around me. At junior school we were given our maths lesson first and once we had completed it were allowed to read a book from the library at the back of the class while waiting for the rest of the class to finish. One day I got so engrossed in a book that I didn’t realize everyone had finished the maths and was ready to start the next lesson. The teacher spoke to me several times but of course I didn’t hear. Eventually the sound of laughter filtered through to me and when I looked up to see what was happening I was mortified to see everyone looking at me and laughing. The teacher very politely asked if I was ready for the next lesson which made the class laugh even more. I wished the floor would open up and swallow me. Needless to say I made sure that never happened again. Late afternoon we had our glass of wine outside after which I made supper before watching TV. There was a lot of thunder and lightning around but no more rain. There wasn’t very much on TV so I went to bed to read some more.
Monday
I was up at six again when my alarm went off. The brats went out after their usual biscuit treat and I sat with my coffee. Today was a normal routine day and I made breakfast for Hubby and he was able to stay in bed for a change. Gino arrived at about eight to help Hubby. The Vehicle Carrier Service were due today to fetch the Studebaker Hawk that was going down to its new home in P. E. and Hubby wanted him to help in getting it ready. Hubby phoned the people to see what time they would be coming and was told they would be there about twelve. There was plenty of time to sort out the car so Gino decided to check what was needed to install outside plugs for us (he has been promising to do it for months now)after which he and Hubby went off to the hardware to get what was needed and I decided to do my ironing before it got too hot. They were gone for ages and I eventually phoned to see if they had decided to take a quick trip to Alberton. They were at the Nursery in Meyerton buying trees to plant for the new year. I started a beef olive dish ready for lunch just as they got back. Gino started the plugs while Hubby and the gardener started planting. They had brought several seedling trays of flowers, herbs and three trees. Hubby replanted the herb garden with the new plants and extended the garden with a rosemary and lavender bush as well as a bay leaf tree. A tree was planted in the play area as well as against the boundary fence. The flowers were dotted around the beds. Everything looked good after they had finished. There has certainly been more rain this season so far more than normal as the lawn out the back is looking very lush with no bare patches at all. It has been years since it last looked so good. I made rice and peas to go with the beef olives and work stopped while we ate. Gino carried on afterwards with the plugs and Hubby had a call to say the Stud would be collected at three. Diane and I went into Meyerton to do some shopping and sort some things out at the bank. We arrived back at three thirty to find the Stud was still there. Hubby phoned to see where the driver was and discovered he was almost there. Him and Gino went to show the way from the highway while we unpacked the shopping. The Stud was loaded onto the trailer. Diane and I went to check on proceedings and then went for a walk. When we got back Gino was finishing off the plug in the braai area. Diane and I poured shandies and we all sat chilling under the trees. Hubby’s friend arrived and joined us. We sat until the rain that had been threatening all day started. There was lots of thunder, lightning and strong winds. The friend left and we made snacks for supper seeing as we had our cooked meal at lunch time. Gino left afterwards and Diane and I cleaned up before chilling in front of the TV with our Milo.

The festive Season

Christmas Eve
Had set my alarm for 4.00am but Hubby was a better alarm as he woke me with a cup of coffee and a slice of toast before the time. I had just finished when the alarm went off. We both got ourselves dressed, sorted the dogs and left for the airport. We were both so excited as we were off to fetch Diane. It was about five once we had parked at the airport. The trip through had been quick and uneventful thanks to the early time and time of year - the road works are at a standstill until the new year. Hubby headed for the loo while I checked the arrivals board. The plane had landed half an hour earlier so after giving up waiting for Hubby I headed for the arrivals point. I just made it as Diane came through within five minutes. We were really thrilled to see each other and Diane was glad to be back on South African soil. After a wait for Hubby who didn’t materialize we went upstairs to the food court to look for him. There was no sign of him and after about ten minutes I told Diane to stay there while I went back down to look for him. Sure enough he was there waiting for Diane to come through and wondering where I was. We went back up to Diane and then headed to Wimpy for breakfast. Nothing can beat a Wimpy Breakfast!! Once we had eaten and had several cups of coffee we headed home arriving back by seven. The morning was spent chilling under the trees chatting and catching up on each other’s news.At about one we headed into Alberton. First stop was the workshop where Uncle Ivan was waiting for us so he could head off to his daughter ready for Christmas. He wasn’t there but had walked down to the shops. Diane and I went looking for him while Hubby waited there with Faizel (checking how he was doing). We found Uncle Ivan and gave him a lift back up to the workshop. After things were sorted out we left for Angie’s where we were having a big get-together for Christmas. Angie is in the catering industry and she puts on an impressive spread. We spent a fabulous afternoon socializing, eating, drinking and generally having a great time together. Those that we had Oz souvenirs for were thrilled with their Kangaroos and Koalas. It was well after seven by the time we left and almost dark. We stopped at the Randhart Woolies food store for Christmas Day supplies before heading home. Everyone was really tired now especially Diane – jet lag was starting to be felt. We were all in bed shortly after nine as it had been a very long day.
Christmas Day
Hubby was up first around eight and made us breakfast in bed. I could really get used to this life of leisure. It will be a rude awakening when the workshop re-opens and life is back to the normal routine. After a leisurely morning chilling outside we all went for a nap as the heat and long day yesterday was still affecting us. I surfaced first and decided as it was too hot to be outside and picnic as we had planned so decided to cook instead. I roasted potatoes, made veg and rice and carved the chicken from Woolies. Diane woke and put out all the Christmas Décor on the table. We really enjoyed our Christmas Lunch which we finished off with a pudding we had found at Woolies. It was a jelly smothered in all sorts of fresh berries and strawberries and it was perfect for the hot weather. The rest of the day was spent chilling and watching Christmas shows on TV. After the full day yesterday we certainly needed our quiet relaxing day.
Boxing Day
Wonderful Hubby was up first again and brought us breakfast in bed. Life sure is good. After clearing the kitchen and feeding the dogs we decided to take the Sunbeam for a drive to Parys. It was a gorgeous day with the sun shining in a brilliant blue sky. I drove going through Vanderbijl and past the Barrage to get there as it is a more scenic route. Everywhere was so lush and green after all the rain we have had. At the end of the Barrage road we noticed a farm with a Tea Garden sign. The place was full of cannas in flower including red ones. Hubby loves red cannas and said we should stop there on the way back and see if they had red ones for sale. We reached Parys about twelve and drove around looking at all the food, craft and antique spots deciding which place looked the best to eat at. Everywhere looked good but we settled on a coffee shop cum restaurant and deli called Feasts. The decision was an excellent one. Feasts was set inside a lovely herb garden with fountains. The deli had very unusual chutneys and jams. The menu was impressive and it was not easy deciding what to eat. Hubby settled on a rump steak with chips and veg, Diane chose vegetarian pasta and I had a chicken pasta. We were all really pleased with our choice. Diane’s meal was so good that she polished everything off (She always takes home a doggy bag). Hubby had beans and pumpkin as his veg and said that the beans were the best ever (they were sprinkled with herbs). His steak was so tender it just melted in the mouth. The cheese sauce on my pasta was the tastiest and cheesiest I have ever tasted. We had our glass of red wine with our meal. After that delicious meal we knew we couldn’t leave without sampling a dessert. We all settled for a honey and cinnamon cheesecake. Luckily the portion wasn’t too big as the cheesecake was too good to waste any of it. By the time the meal was finished we could hardly move (we very rarely ever have a dessert when dining out) but our taste buds had just had the treat of their lives. We will definitely go back there. That place is very lucky to have such an outstanding chef. After our meal we wandered around the town walking off our meal and checking out the shops. Parys is a lovely town and the perfect tourist destination. Hubby remembers what a popular spot it was when he was growing up. He and his family spent many weekends there. After our walk Hubby drove us around the town and down to the river where the old swing bridge is.We left Parys late afternoon and went back the same way stopping at the Bon-Af Berry Farm which we had noticed on our outward trip. The farm has been in the family for five generations since 1839 and was very interesting with a museum above the tea shop. They have a very large berry orchard growing about seventy types of berry. We were given a short lecture on berry growing and then let loose in the orchard where we could sample as much as we liked. It is not a place to go to after eating a huge lunch but we were able to sample several different kinds of berry. Unfortunately Hubby had no luck with getting a red canna but did buy several cape gooseberry plants as well a blueberry plant. After a cup of rooibos at the tea room we left for home arriving back at about six. After such a food-filled day none of us could even think about food so we just chilled outside under the tree until thunder and lightning drove us inside. The storm lasted most of the night. We spent the evening watching TV before having a Milo and going to bed. We really did have a fabulous day out and can’t wait to go back there for a repeat performance. Very few of us realize what wonderful places we have on our doorsteps.
Cheers and all the very best for the Festive Season.

Tuesday/ Wednesday

Tuesday
After Hubby and I chilled outside with our morning cuppa and chat we breakfasted and while I cleaned the kitchen Hubby sorted out his toe. He has still not managed to get it right unfortunately. I went to switch the TV off after watching the news and weather but before I switched off I saw the movie Secondhand Lions was on. I had enjoyed watching it last week and knew Hubby would enjoy it. While he watched I did my chores and got myself ready for Alberton. He thoroughly enjoyed the movie and was glad I had told him to watch it. We left for Alberton to go fetch the beds I had seen taking the bakkie. After loading the beds we headed for the workshop so that I could finish faxing my statements. While I faxed Hubby did some more work on machines he is overhauling ready for re-opening in the New Year. By the time we had both finished it was late morning. After stopping to buy paint for Faizel to paint the press we went home via Steers. We both had chips, a steak roll and an ice cold coke. I know. Very bad for the health but it was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal.Arriving home we reversed the bakkie in for offloading and then flaked out on the bed for our siesta. Things like this are very important at our age. I got up around four when it was cooler and the gardener and I offloaded the beds. Hubby and I then had our sundowner and chat under the trees. The mozzies chased us in as usual. Hubby felt energetic enough to make supper after our relax outside. After the super meal he made I cleaned the kitchen and we watched TV. I watched CSI and Hubby watched his cooking programmes – he says he has picked up lots of tips from watching. We had our Milo and then were into bed.WednesdayToday Hubby was up early and brought me my coffee in bed. I dozed for a couple of more minutes before taking it outside to have my chill time. Hubby joined me and we sat chatting and chilling for nearly an hour before I fed the dogs and made breakfast. We both really enjoy this time together in the morning and evening. After breakfast I did some office work before showering to get ready for Germiston. Hubby and I left at about ten to attend the funeral of an old friend, Dot Illett. She had been 88yrs old. I have known her for about 24yrs and Hubby for years longer than that. She was a wonderful person. Always happy and smiling. The service was at the Anglican Church which is an old and magnificent building at the top of Germiston. It is always good to see friends again but sad that it is at only at times like this. We all seem to get so busy with our lives that we don’t always get to see people we should see more of and then of course it is then too late. The tea afterwards was in the church hall and we spent time with people who we hadn’t seen in years. Richard Illett had come up from Cape Town where he has lived for many years. The last time we saw him was at Dot’s 8oth birthday. His daughter was not able to be there as she now lives and works in London. It was good to catch up on everybody’s news and lives. After we left Germiston we stopped at the workshop to see how Faizel was doing. All was fine so we headed to Alberton City for some needed supplies. While I shopped Hubby wandered around looking for snack food. He certainly has been enjoying our snacking outside. After shopping for the mundane I did some last minute Christmas shopping while Hubby headed for the car as his foot was feeling painful.Arriving home we unpacked the shopping before having our siesta. We were up at four thirty and headed out for a glass of wine under the trees. It is such a lovely time of day outside. The air has cooled down and there always seems to be a light breeze. Hubby made some snacks and we sat munching, chatting and drinking until just before seven. Hubby left for another neighbourhood blitz and I cleaned the kitchen. The siren was set off and wailed for about five minutes before stopping. If I was up to no good in the area in the middle of the night and heard that going off I think I would just take off running in a panic. At least I hope that is what would happen. I have done my blog. Hubby is back and watching TV – cooking as usual. I shall now make a Milo and watch my TV.

Saturday thro to Monday

Saturday
Up early as usual with our chill time outside. Hubby left early for the Piston Ring venue. This was last meeting of the year and he needed to set up for the breakfast scheduled for Sunday. He had ordered wors from his favourite butcher in Alberton( they make the best wors ever) and went via there to pick up the order for Sunday. The order was for 40kgs so they plan on making plenty of breakfasts. I spent the day cleaning up the house. Hubby arrived home about three and we both had a nap. We are having a heat wave at the moment and at our age need our naps to keep going as the heat is exhausting. When we surfaced we chilled outside with a wine before having an early supper. Hubby had his neighbourhood watch patrol for after twelve so he went to bed early. I watched the “ Quantum of Solace” – the bond movie with Daniel Craig. When it finished I set my alarm for 12.30am and fell asleep. When the alarm went off I woke hubby and made him coffee and a piece of toast to take with on his patrol. I showered and then watched TV while I waited for him to come back. I watched Layercake which also starred Daniel Craig. The movie finished just as Hubby got back. It was well after two and we both went to bed.
Sunday
Hubby was eager to be off to the Piston Ring and woke me with breakfast in bed at 5.30am. I could hardly keep my eyes open as I ate and had my coffee. I decided it was much too early for me to surface. Hubby left for the meeting and I went back to sleep waking at around eight. After my chill coffee outside I felt more human and phoned hubby to see how things were going. Breakfast was scheduled for nine and they were getting ready to start the food. The menu was wors, bacon, eggs, beans fried with tomato, garlic and onion and a roll. Those attending the meeting sure had a good nosh up. Late morning I went to the local shop for dog food and got myself some chips from the take away. I really enjoyed them. The weather was really hot again and when I got back I put all the fans on and opened windows wide to let the breeze blow through. Hubby and I had a nap when he got back around two. Unfortunately the phone kept ringing so we didn’t have much of a nap. About four we chilled outside with a shandy and a chat. I caught up on all the news and skinner from the Piston Ring. It was so lovely outside as a cool breeze was blowing. Hubby decided to make snacks again and we had a glass of red wine with. We sat until it got dark. The sunset was stunning – shades of orange and pink. I really love my piece of paradise. Hubby went to bed early to catch up on his sleep and I watched some TV. There wasn’t much on and I kept falling asleep. I went to take the dogs out for the last time. As I went to the door a large frog was sitting on the step. I closed the door as I didn’t want the dogs to hurt it. I sloshed water out the window at it to chase it away. There were two dog bowls outside with water in and the frog just jumped into the nearest one and sat in the water. The experts say if you have frogs you have a good eco system in your area. We have plenty of frogs around and now that it is their mating season they serenade all night long. We have a pond outside our bedroom window and by the volume of noise we must have a huge one in there. I quickly took the dogs out while it was in the bowl of water and then went to bed.
Monday
We had a very rude awakening this morning. There was such a tremendous clap of thunder that it sounded as if something had crashed into the house. There was a huge electrical storm raging outside. I’m sure the whole neighbourhood was awake after that. The rain started but didn’t last long. I had my morning coffee watching some TV. It rained on and off nearly all day so we will only fetch the bed tomorrow. I spent the day pottering around and waiting for the weather to improve so I could do statements. Hubby was home fairly early and we chilled and chatted with a shandy outside. Luckily the sun was out by then. While we were sitting there a little Cape White Eye was flitting among the plants right next to us. It was amazing as us and the dogs sitting there didn’t bother it at all. I have finished the statements and emailed what I can. The rest can be done tomorrow from the workshop. We have had our milo. The blog is done. All that’s left is to shower and into bed.
Cheers and enjoy your week.

End of our week

Thursday
Was up as usual chilling under the trees with my morning pick me up. To be back to normal after our lovely day out was not easy. The holiday mood was still there and it was hard to get down to the usual chores and routine after Hubby left for the workshop. Hubby takes this chance when the workshop is closed to make sure nothing needs overhauling , fixing or just repainting so that all is in order for the re-opening in the New Year.I spent the day pottering around until Hubby came home late afternoon. I needed to go to the ATM so Hubby and I quickly went into Meyerton. We were surprised to see Pick n Pay still open so did some shopping for the weekend. Browsing around we found some really good snack food and red wine( Mine was all gone).Turning into our road on the way home we spotted a meerkat crossing over in front of us. When it spotted us it dashed back into the bushes on the roadside. Things like this is what makes this place so special. There are also the occasional little buck spotted in the farm areas here as well as jakkel. Country life and our little spot of Paradise is really special and nothing and nowhere can compare. When we got back we offloaded and decided to ` Test Drive’ our snacks. Hubby made the snacks while I poured the wine. Gosh but they were good! We sat feeding our faces and nattering until it was dark and the mozzies were out in force again. There’s always something waiting to spoil paradise. Seeing as we didn’t need much supper after all that I just cooked chicken legs which we had with a roll at about nine.
Friday
Was up early again to my normal routine after chilling and absorbing the tranquility of paradise. Hubby left for the workshop and I headed to Alberton for shopping I needed. First stop was the license dept as there were several to be paid. I thought it would be a breeze waltzing in and out as most people would be away for the hols. What a rude awakening I had. The queue was as far as the door. I just stepped through and was straight into the back of the line. It was an hour before I got to the top of the queue. When I left the queue was outside the door. After standing in the blazing sun(temp was 34 C) for so long the car was an oven. At least it is now done. I was looking for a new double bed for the spare room so stopped at various shops on the way through Alberton. No luck! The prices were ridiculous so I stopped and looked at bedding. Either everybody has bought bedding for Christmas or the shops don’t waste space on such mundane things over the festive season. There was absolutely nothing. I consoled myself by stopping at Jam for a couple of tops. Shopping is good for the soul!
I went up to the workshop for a brief visit before going down to Alberton City to see if I would have better luck. Bad Idea! Everybody was shopping there. I wanted to park under cover to keep the car cool. It took about 20 mins to find a parking. I actually parked right at the top in an area I never even Knew was there. Live and Learn! The shops there were just as bad so I left for home after getting myself an ice cold Soda Water. On the way home I went via the main street in the old shopping area and spotted a bed shop. Talk about lucky! They have just opened and had lots of opening specials. I found exactly what I wanted. Hubby and I will go fetch it on Monday with his bakkie. I must still look for bedding but will wait for the New Year. They should have a decent range by then. When I got home I collapsed on the bed to recover from my ordeal. I had my much needed wine outside at about five. Hubby was home late as he and his pal have started their Friday arvie coffee get together again. I made a late supper again of steak, egg and chips. Delicious and perfect for a casual Friday meal. After watching TV and having a Milo I went to bed. Hubby was already snoring away.

Wednesday - Day of Reconciliation

Woken at my usual time but not by my alarm. Seeing as it was a public holiday Hubby decided to bring me breakfast in bed. Bliss! I lay in bed listening to the birds outside who were in full chorus. After feeding the dogs Hubby and I got ready for a day out.We had decided earlier in the week that we would treat ourselves to an outing to go buy some trout which we haven’t had lately. We left around nine, first stopping for petrol and a juice for the road. We took the back roads to avoid all the road works everywhere and joined the highway past Benoni. It was a lovely drive. The roads were fairly quiet and everywhere was so green. We travelled through Belfast where we were stopped in a Police Road Block. I had to produce my Drivers License and they checked my lights as well as the license disc. Luckily all was in order. We reached Dullstroom at about twelve and had a look around an Antique Shop before heading for a bite to eat. We found a really quaint little café where we each had a cappuccino before having an open sandwich with trout, cream cheese and salad. It was delicious as the trout was so fresh. I had my usual glass of red wine with it. We were in no rush and sat chatting and enjoying our meal and surroundings. Afterwards I had another cappuccino and a piece of carrot cake while Hubby had another sandwich. When we eventually finished our meal we headed further up the main street stopping in various craft and curio shops. There was some really good stuff around. We found a small branch of Millys where we bought our trout to take home (we had put a cooler bag with ice bricks in the car ready). When we came out of Millys Hubby noticed a Clock Shop over the road (another of his passions) which we just had to visit. The place was unbelievable. I have never seen so many clocks in one place. They had everything possible from little clocks to the most stunning Grandfather Clocks. There was a Yellow Submarine Clock as well as a Marilyn Monroe clock. They had about 50 different Grandfather Clocks and hundreds of others. Anyone looking for a clock would be spoilt for choice. After leaving the shop we took a drive around the town looking at the lovely old churches and houses before heading back home. Deciding not to go back through Belfast we took a dirt road through to Machadadorp. The decision was a good one as the scenery was fantastic with lots of Guest Farms and Trout Dams along the way. As far as the eye could see was rolling hills covered in green. There has certainly been plenty of rain so far this season. We rejoined the Highway just before the Millys Star Stop and headed back towards home. By now we were feeling thirsty so we stopped at the Millys Restaurant to have a Rock Shandy after which we went into Millys shop and then into their express shop. We had decided today was a no rush day and took our tome wandering around. Of course we had to buy more – sweets and nuts plus a trout sandwich to share later. We couldn’t resist as they had such huge chunks of trout in it.We climbed back into the car and carried on our way home. Luckily the roads were still quiet as I’m sure most people have already left for their Christmas holidays. The workshop closed on Friday (11th) as did most places. It was nearly seven when we arrived home, having eaten our sandwich at about half six in the car. Those chunks of trout were the best. The first thing we did was put the trout into the freezer and then we sat outside having an ice cold shandy. The sun hadn’t set yet and it was lovely outside. We sat until the Mozzies chased us in. We really enjoyed our day out and are feeling relaxed and recharged ready for anything that comes our way. The blog is done and all that’s left is for Hubby and I to have a Milo and watch TV. Cheers

First Week back Home

Well we are back and finally getting back into the swing of our normal lives. The first couple of days were terrible as we really battled with jet lag. Neither of us slept well the first few nights. This made it even harder to catch up on sleep and get back to normal. By Saturday I was sleeping properly and had adjusted to being home again. It was really great to be back in S.A. The garden is looking really lush and green as there had been a lot of rain while we were away. Just to sit under the trees again with my coffee listening to the birds was heaven. Hubby and I sit out there every morning having our morning cuppa. As glad as we were to be back, the dogs were even happier to see us again and join us for the daily cuppa. Digby was filthy – not my little white baby – but it was a couple of days before I was able to feel energetic enough to wash him. I’m sure he is feeling great being clean again.
We enjoyed seeing Perth but have both decided there is no place like home. The scenery here is so lush and green at the moment. Perth is brown and dry as they only have winter rain. Restaurants and entertainment places really need to visit S.A. to see what good food is about. Even KFC and McDonalds is not a patch on our places plus there is no Steers. The cost of living is really high and the shops not as good as ours. The safety factor and family orientated life is obviously a big plus as is the public transport system. There we have a lot to learn. When we went to the Open Air Concert we really enjoyed that but what most impressed us was that ,after , when everybody left there was not a single piece of paper or rubbish lying anywhere. Unbelievable considering everyone was picnicking there and the place was packed. Here we would need a team of cleaners in afterwards. Our beaches and facilities along the beaches (somewhere for a cuppa) are far superior though I did really enjoy being on the beach there.Well we are happy we went to Perth and have seen that part of the world but I doubt whether we would bother going back. I would rather visit the U.K. and Scotland. Hubby would like to visit America someday but that doesn’t appeal to me. Too many hillbillies for my liking.
The peace and quiet of our plot has soaked right through me and all is right in my world again.
Today I was busy in the office when I heard a bird singing really loudly. I went to look and as I walked into the kitchen a little weaver bird flew out. I went back to the office and about ten minutes later heard it again. I crept down the passage quietly and peeped round carefully. The weaver was back and hopping around the kitchen floor singing away. Most unusual. I made a movement and he flew out and sat in the tree by the back door singing away still. I shut the back door as I would not like the dogs to have him for a snack. There are a lot of birds around at the moment. There are several Red Bishops building nests around the garden as well as lots of weavers. Luckily we don’t seem to get crows here. Wherever we went in Perth were crows galore driving us dilly with their incessant noise.
Hubby has gone to his committee meeting at the Piston Ring ready for the Sunday Meeting. His services are required as chef for the end of year breakfast. I told him he had better let them know he really can’t do it. He got antibiotics for his toe which was infected again while on holiday.( He did too much walking and running for buses.) The antibiotics finished today and his toe has not improved in any way whatsoever. I told him to go back to the Dr. today but you Know Men – too stubborn for their own good. I am doing my blog now and then will watch some TV with a Milo. It just doesn’t taste the same when Diane is not here to share it. I’m sure we will really appreciate each other once she is back. Well at least I hope she appreciates me. LOL!
I miss her terribly especially with regard to doing the blog. It took me ages to sort myself out to be able to do it on my own but at least I’m on track again. Also we put the Vodacom Connection away so if there was a break-in it would not be found. Well Diane is like my mother. She hides something so well it can’t be found again. I spent the first two days back searching every possible spot. No Luck. I went out and bought a new sim card and airtime for her connection which I did find. She has the sim card for it in her phone in Oz. Really Helpful I must say. Cheers. Public holiday tomorrow . Enjoy the day

Flight Back

Our last day was hectic with getting sorted out to leave – doing all washing ( I can’t handle packing dirty clothes),stripping beds, washing bedding and remaking them. Was up and out early with Diane for my last walk along the beach and dip in the sea. Sniff ,sniff. Really enjoyed it. We were all packed and ready by late afternoon. All that was left to do was a light supper and farewells to be said. Our flight left at midnight so it was a very long day. Once on board we were given drinks(my trusty red wine) and a meal. I had fish and Hubby had beef. After our coffee it was time to try and sleep. Unfortunately this time the flight was fairly full and we had to stay in our allotted seats to sleep. Hubby and I were in row 63 and Ali and Travis were in row 44. Which was a relief as Ali has been in a permanent bad mood while on holiday and we needed our alone time to try and recover. The time was two in the morning and I set my time to S.A. time – eight o’clock. Early for S.A. to go to bed but not for Oz. We were not able to sleep apart from a nap now and again. Got woken for breakfast at three in the morning. Landed at five managing to go through passport control quickly but waited forever for the luggage to come through. It was really good to be back in S.A. We had a coffee at the airport before heading to the workshop and then home. All was fine and running smoothly at both places.Hubby’s toe had become re-infected while we were away and he went to the Dr. for antibiotics in the afternoon. We were both in bed early as jet lag had caught up but neither of us slept well. Diane is still in Oz and I really miss her. We get on well and are very good friends too. We only have the occasional falling out which is over quickly thank goodness.I apologize for the delay in updating the blog but I battled without Diane but have finally sorted things out and will be on track again. Cheers .Have a good week.

Last week in Oz

Our last week has ended and it is time for home again. This week has been a busy one. On Tuesday we went on a BLT – bus, lunch and tram. We left from Perth at 9.45am on the boat and cruised down to Freemantle. It was a beautiful day and the views along the Swan River where unbelievable. At one stage Diane and I went to the front of the boat and saw hundreds of jellyfish in the water. At first we thought it was plastic bags floating along but a closer look revealed transparent jellyfish. We reached Freemantle at about eleven and hopped onto the Tram for a tour of the town. Freemantle is the main port with billions of dollars of revenue generated annually. Our tour around was really interesting – we saw all the historic sites – from the War Memorial, Prison (the first person hanged there was a fifteen year old boy), old mine houses, historical buildings, museums and the fishing harbour. The tour guide was excellent with a really good sense of humour. After the tram ride we got back on the James Stirling for the cruise back to Perth having a really good lunch on the way. The James Stirling is the biggest Cruiser owned by Cooks Cruises and was a beautiful boat. Back in Perth we jumped on the double-decker bus for the tour around the town and through Kings Park. We sat right at the front which was really scary as it seemed as if the bus was not going to miss other traffic when it turned corners etc. After the ride we did some souvenir shopping and had a snack and drink before heading home. All in all it was a fabulous and interesting day.On Thursday we went to Caversham Wild Animal Park. We arrived in time for an early lunch of fish and chips. Hubby visited the Motor Museum which he thoroughly enjoyed while we went to the Childrens Forest. The Ozzies really have a lot to learn. Our forest area on the plot is a forest. This was just an area of dry grass and bushes. The heat was unreal – hot and muggy. We refreshed ourselves with a cold drink before going into the animal section. This was beautiful and well worth the visit. We went into the Kangaroo and Koala enclosures and got really good photos. We left late afternoon and got back in time for a Christmas Dinner Bob and Sylv had made. This was the only time not interfering with the wedding plans and while everyone was still together – Bob’s children and partners were also there for the wedding.Diane and I are still enjoying our early morning walks and swim at the beach. We usually arrive around seven in the morning while it is not windy and too hot. We are the only ones still getting up early.
On Saturday was the Main Event. Sylv and Bob got married with Sylv making a Stunning Bride. Alan and I both walked her down the aisle. The wedding took place in Kings Park which was a lovely setting. Diane took some really good pics. Ali read a poem for them. Desiree and Dougie with their boys had come to Perth from Adelaide for the weekend to attend the wedding. It was good to see them and catch up on news. Everything went well though it was rather hot. After the wedding we all headed back to the house where most of us got into the pool to cool off. The day ended with a tasty meal at Kulture.I will really miss the walks along the beach and the freedom to do so. Everybody makes use of the walkways – not matter what time of day you walk there is always plenty of people out and about walking, running or cycling. The beach also always has people in the water – a lot seem to go down before going off to work or school.
Well that is our Oz trip over. Will update our return tomorrow.Cheers

End of our 2nd Week

Diane and I are still enjoying our walks along the beach every afternoon. We have also started having early morning swims at the beach. Today (Monday) was the earliest as we left for the beach before seven. The weather is lovely that time of day – no wind, a fairly calm sea and not too hot to walk back afterwards. Travis loves our mornings on the beach and can’t get enough of the sea. We have built a sandcastle which he had fun destroying.

The public transport system is excellent – we have used both trains and buses. We had a trip to Freemantle where we wandered through the Shipwreck Museum. It was fascinating and the amount of wrecks found off the Oz coast is unbelievable.

On Saturday evening we had a picnic supper at Emerald Park where we watched an open air concert. The music was a tribute to Cliff Richard and the Rolling Stones. The music was excellent, the company was good and the atmosphere was fantastic. We danced to the music and had a great time.

On Sunday we took Sylvia for a lunch at the Indian Ocean in Mindarie Keys. It was her Hen Party and she really enjoyed herself. The food was excellent and the afternoon passed in a flash.

Diane and I had a good long walk along the beach afterwards to walk off the effects of our weekend. We were out for an hour and a half but it didn’t feel like exercise at all as the area is so scenic.

We have started to get a tan now and fitter with all our walks so we are feeling pretty good!

Cheers. Have a good week.

End of our first week in Oz

Well we have come to the end of our first week in Oz. We have seen our first kangaroo – of all places – on the golf course down the road. Of course we didn’t go to close as we would have hated to be in a boxing match with an angry or annoyed kangaroo. We have walked along the beach. The beach sand is different to S.A. It is finer and softer and where the waves wash over it, it becomes like clay. Strange!

We have wandered around the shops, seeing many weird and wonderful sights in fashion and hair styles. Tattoos are very fashionable here with most people having one. Walking is the national sport and footpaths are along every street. Perth is the Windy City – just like Port Elizabeth.

Today (Sunday) we visited a Chocolate Factory. As you walk in the counter has bowls of chocolate chips which are for tasting. There is dark, milk and white to try. My favourite was the dark. The choice of chocolate for sale was unbelievable. From truffles with every filling imaginable to plain bars. It is such a pity the Rand is so low compared to the Dollar. After that visit we went off to the winery (Lancaster) where they had a really good variety of delicious wines. I enjoyed the Shiraz the most. The winery and wines are as good as the Cape just no mountains around for scenery. We ended the day chilling around the pool before having another walk along the beach – we really needed it after all the chocolate and wine.

We are all enjoying our time in Oz and looking forward to the rest of our time here. We will keep you updated with our impressions and experiences here.

Cheers and have a good week.

Hi from Oz

We left on Sunday at six for the airport. Once we arrived we queued to book in after which we went for something to eat at the Mugg & Bean. We ate our meal and said goodbye to Geno who had dropped us off. The time was now after nine so we made our way to the boarding gate which was A14 and right near the end, giving us a good walk. There was a queue there and everyone’s hand luggage was being checked. Hubby and Ali went to the left and we went to the right. Ali and Hubby were waved through as they had Travis but Diane’s and mine was thoroughly checked. I lost my cleanser and toner as they were too big. Diane nearly lost all her toiletries as they were not in plastic but luckily a woman next to us had spare bags and gave us one for the things. We then made our way to the plane where we had been put together in row 63. The staff on board were really friendly and said as soon as everyone had boarded they would see what spares seats there were for Ali and Travis to spread across to sleep. We were pleased when they came back and said we could move across as the plane was quite empty. Diane and Hubby sat either side of us in a two seat space on their own while Ali and I sat at each end of the row. Drinks were offered ( I had my glass of wine) and supper was brought around – a choice of chicken or beef. The meal was good with a salad, a roll, the main course, a brownie and cheese and biscuits. I was only able to eat the main course with some salad. Next was coffee and tea, after which we settled for the night. It was now about twelve. Behind Diane were two empty seats so I moved there to try and sleep. We had given Travis some Stilpain and he had gone to sleep with a bottle before we even levelled out.
Diane watched movies all night while the rest of us tried to sleep but as you all know plane seats are not made for comfort. Also I was still annoyed about losing my things so that kept me awake too. After much tossing and turning the lights were put on at six for breakfast to be dished out. The girls and I chose the continental breakfast which was really good but too much for us to eat all of it. Hubby chose omelette which he said was awful. Travis woke as we finished eating and Ali gave him the vanilla custard the hostess had given for him. He didn’t seem very hungry but we persevered(Dumb thing to do) as he suddenly brought it all up. We cleaned him and the seat as best we could managing to finish in time for the descent. We landed at ten to seven which was good time as we had taken off at about ten thirty.
After going through customs we came out to a great welcome from Sylv and all. It was great to see Sammy and Wayne (unbelievable how much they have grown). It was lunchtime Oz time but none of us could have managed another bite. We drove to Sylv and Bob’s place being shown some places of interest on the way. To us the place seems similar to Cape Town just flatter. After off loading we had something to drink and headed to the shops for some essentials. After getting back Ali saw to Travis and put him to bed. Hubby and Bob went Fish and Chip shopping. The meal was really enjoyable which we had with wine. By now we could hardly keep our eyes open and went off to bed at nine thirty( only three thirty our time). I set my watch to Oz time before going to sleep.
On Tuesday morning we surfaced at six and enjoyed a coffee outside on the patio together before having bacon sarmies. Hubby had forgotten his Injections in the fridge at home so Sylv took us to the Dr for a prescription. We tried three chemists but none had them in stock so we ordered them. Bob was off to work so the rest of us with Wayne ( poor Sammy was at school) went off to Hilary’s for a walk through the centre and a spot of lunch. The meal was delicious. After that we walked along the beachfront walkway until the beach. Travis couldn’t believe all the sand and just wanted to play in it. We took him into the water which he just loved. He played around for nearly an hour before we left the beach. We headed home for supper and to put Travis to bed. He was really tired after his play. After supper Ali, Diane and Wayne went out for a drive around. They returned about eleven after which we all went to sleep.
I couldn’t believe it when I woke this morning(Wednesday) and saw that it was after nine. We got up for our coffee which we had inside as it was very windy and overcast. We had some rain during the morning which apparently is unusual for this time of year. Bob went off to work after showing us on the map several places in the area to go to. Sylv had left before eight to go to work.

After looking at the map we decided to head for Joondalup which seemed to have a nature reserve. With me behind the wheel we set off. Travis fell asleep immediately. It started raining again so anything outside was out of the question. We drove around for a while and then looked for a shopping centre to have lunch at. We found our way to the same centre we had been to on Monday afternoon which luckily had underground parking. After wandering around we stopped at the food court. We must have been obvious tourists as we went through the whole section looking at what was on offer before deciding on what to have. Price played a large role in the decision as typically we converted to Rands with everything. This Oz sure is expensive when you come from South Africa. I must say lunch was good – Turkish Bread toasted sarmies and a wrap for Diane. After lunch we shopped around and found a little souvenir shop where we stocked up on a few things to take back.

It was now nearly four so we made our way back to Sylv. Hubby was navigator and I must admit not a very good one. He blamed the map book of course. We found a way fairly easily though and arrived back as Sylv arrived from work.

We have had supper, chatted and watched some TV. Everyone has gone to bed which is where I will be going to shortly once my blog is finished. I am enjoying Perth which is what Rhodesia was like when it was Rhodesia. The place is much smaller and not nearly as bustling as Joburg. The shopping centres are much smaller but then the population is far less. It was easier driving around though nerve – racking as the traffic laws are strictly enforced and I worried in case of doing something wrong through ignorance.

BUT I have survived my first excursion on our own And we found our way back.

Cheers until the next blog.

Final Countdown

Saturday
Chilled outside with a quick morning coffee before doing my blog. Fed the dogs and then started my statements. Gino arrived about ten to sort out the roof leak above the lounge. He went up on the roof and discovered that the hail yesterday had cracked a tile in half. Luckily we had a few spare ones and he was able to replace it. While I carried on with my statements Diane faxed what gets sent from the computer. Hubby went to town and came back with Rotis for lunch. We ate and I finished my statements. Before going into Alberton to fax the rest from the land line we started cleaning the bedrooms and did some washing. We left for Alberton just before three stopping at Nampak with our paper for recycling. I dropped Diane off at Julie with her goldfish and carried on to the workshop to send faxes. The faxing went well and I was able to send off everything. So all my November work is done now – what a relief. I went back for Diane and we had coffee with Julie and Zack who wished us a good holiday. We left for home dropping off the vat return and getting dog food before arriving home at six.
We carried on cleaning and I did all my filing. There was no time for TV today as we wanted to finish as much as possible before going to bed. Nearly all is done so thankfully tomorrow can be a more relaxing day. There have been plenty of calls today wishing us all a wonderful holiday. I have felt much more relaxed today even though it has been so busy. Being busy is better than being stressed. I can vouch for that.
Sunday
Up to chill outside with a cup of coffee. Hubby joined me and then made breakfast which we ate outside. When I went to bed I put on a load of washing which I hung out. I started the last clean of the bathroom and put a second load of washing on. I noticed the water was running very slowly but didn’t worry as that often happens out here. When I cleaned the sink the water out the cold tap was hot and then when I went outside the outside tap was hot. Can you believe it! We now have a problem with one of the geysers and are waiting for Gino to come check which one has a faulty valve. These things are sent to try us. We REALLY need this holiday now! Trevor arrived from up the road to fetch a set of keys for here so they can also keep an eye on the place. He saw them working on the pipes up the road so goodness how long they will be. This was supposed to be a stress free day spent getting ready to leave. Can’t even have something hot to drink as there is no water at all.The water finally came on at about one. What a relief! I have finished cleaning, have done my hair and showered. All that’s left is to pack toiletries, get ready and go.I will do the next blog from Oz. Cheers

End of a Stressfull week

Thursday

Up to a lovely day. Had my coffee outside listening to the birds and trying to relax. Had not slept well as I kept thinking about the visas. Hubby joined me for my second cup. After breakfast I went into the bedroom to fetch his tray and noticed a funny smell. I asked him if it was his toe and he said it was the dog which must have rolled in something. A little later he changed the dressing on his toe (he felt too lazy last night) and realized it was his toe. After he left I noticed it still smelt in the bedroom so I stripped the bed and washed everything from the duvet inner to the under blanket. Thank goodness it was such a hot day because everything was dry by two.I tried phoning the High Commission but got no reply and the tracking site had no updates. Stress levels can’t get much higher than this! I got stuck into the kitchen to keep myself busy. Having a ceiling fan in a kitchen is not a good idea when it comes to trying to clean it. Ali and Travis came back from their Top Tots Class and he immediately went to sleep. We checked e-mails and the tracking site – nothing! Travis woke about one and Ali fed him. She was going for a wax at two and wanted me to look after Travis while she was there. I decided to phone the High Commission at half one to see if anything was happening. The lady who answered checked for me and said that the visas had been approved on Wednesday afternoon. When I told her that there was nothing on the tracking site she replied that they probably hadn’t left the building yet and they would be in Rosebank on Friday morning. W e were all absolutely thrilled and jumped around with excitement. Oz here we come. I let Sylv know and she said she will believe it when they are in my `hot little hand’. Ali left and Diane and I decided to go and buy milk at the local garage so we could have something hot to drink. We also got ourselves some chocolate toffees. Travis was really happy to be with Granny. When we got home I started supper and then we sat outside with a coffee while Travis played around the garden. The weather was lovely and sunny still. Ali got back and brought black clouds with her. Within five minutes the sky was overcast and a chill wind was blowing. We decided to go to the supermarket for things needed before the rain started. We got back just as the rain started – perfect timing. I finished supper and then Diane and I had our usual dose of CSI and Milo. I did the blog while having a Chai tea and now Diane and I are off to bed. We have a busy day ahead tomorrow.

Friday

Up to a chill under the trees with Hubby. Another gorgeous day outside – can see its going to be a stinker. After breakfast I sorted out a few queries and then took Travis while Ali did her cleaning as she has clients at nine. I pushed him around on his car while I did my chores. He really loves his car and is quite content to sit on it as long as he is being pushed.
Diane and I left after Ali’s clients had gone at about ten. First stop was the workshop to sort out unpaid invoices. Next was off to the bank to deposit cheques and send a fax. That was the workshop finished with so we could now get on with our tasks for Oz. We stopped at Eastgate to get our International driving licenses from the AA. Our luck they had moved premises to Park Meadows. We walked across as it was easier than going back for the car. Getting them didn’t take long but the walk there and back seemed to take forever. It was really hot outside and going was uphill all the way, plus the AA was right at the other end of the centre. We stopped to get a cold juice on the way back. Mine was finished before we got back to the car. The car was hot to get into as there is no shade in the parking area. We carried on to Rosebank for the visas and couldn’t believe our luck when within five minutes they were in `my grubby little paws’. First thing was to sms Sylv the good news then we stopped for a bite to eat and coffee. We left Rosebank at three in bright sunshine. Luckily the highway was fairly clear as it was too early for the afternoon rush home. As we passed Alberton we went into overcast weather and by the time we got home it was raining. Ali had started supper for us which was a nice surprise. The rest of the afternoon and evening it rained on and off. At about six the thunder and lightning was so bad I went outside and stayed in the braai area with the dogs as they were petrified. We had some hail but luckily it was over within minutes. The strong winds must have blown a roof tile loose as rain poured down the lounge wall right where Diane was sitting. Gino is coming Saturday to sort it out as Hubby can’t climb onto roofs anymore and I most certainly am not going up there. We had supper and watched TV as the weather was too bad to put the computer on. I did the blog quickly this morning before doing anything else.
Cheers and have a good weekend. One more blog on Sunday afternoon and then we are in Oz.

Stressed Out

Stressed out Tuesday
Up to a lovely bright day again. Had my usual coffee under the trees followed immediately by my second cup. I really needed my chill time today as I was already worrying about the visas. After breakfast Hubby left and I did some office work before phoning the High Commission. The recording said everybody was busy and phone later. I cleared a few more things before phoning again. This time I got through but the lady I had dealt with was busy and she would phone me later. Diane and I went into Meyerton to sort out a few things and then needed to go to Heidelberg. We got there only to find after an hour and a half that we had wasted our time so we dashed home to pick up things to do in Alberton. First stop was the license dept to pay due licenses. Before we left there I phoned the High Commission again. This time the lady was still busy and couldn’t come to the phone. I asked if the fax sent had been received (our computer said transmission successful) but was told it hadn’t but the lady was to busy and would only look at the forms on Wednesday. Frustration! Next we stopped at Tremontis as it was now after two and we hadn’t time for lunch. We relaxed slightly while having our favourite scoops again. Once we had finished there we stopped at SARS to drop off the forms for Dec as we get back from Oz too late for the deadline. Last stop was the workshop. From there we stopped at the supermarket to get milk and other necessities. We arrived home just after five and after unloading re-sent the forms to the High Commission. We chilled with a glass of wine. Hubby went off to a car club meeting and Diane and I had supper. We watched our usual on TV having our Milo. I really can’t relax as I’m very stressed about the visas. I hope they are looked at tomorrow and granted which will mean we will be able to pick them up Thursday or Friday.
Wednesday
Having my coffee outside under the trees today was not relaxing as I am too stressed out about these visas. I didn’t even notice the birds singing. All I could think about was visas.
Hubby left after breakfast for his Drs appointment and the insurance lady came to see me about a new medical aid. We sat under the trees drinking coffee and filling in forms but still my mind was full of visa, visa and visa. I just couldn’t settle to do anything constructive. I checked my email but apart from a successful delivery there was nothing from the High Commission – we put a request informing when the email is read and nothing yet. I tried to phone and the recording said they are too busy to answer. All that’s left to do was Hope and Pray. Phoned Hubby to get the latest update from the Dr. His operation for the gall bladder removal is scheduled for the 6th January as the Dr. will be away when we get back. Checked email again. Still nothing. Went into Meyerton to get lunch –Wacky Wednesday again. Got back and ate before checking email again. Still nothing – stress levels were now sky high. Ali wanted to go to Alberton to do shopping and asked me to go with so we left about two. We had a good shopping spree and managed to get all she wanted. Sylvia was in contact during the day in connection with the visas and managed to get through on the phone to the High Commission. She was told the file was out and to phone at three for an answer. When she phoned at three the place was closed and she was most annoyed and sent them an email. Shame she is also stressing now. I can’t believe how we are being messed around. Ali and I got home about half five and we had a glass of wine outside while she gave Travis his supper. He played around the garden until his bath time after which he went to bed. I made supper and then Ali and I packed her case (Trying to be positive). Diane and I watched our daily dose of CSI and NCIS. Diane is now making the Milo (such a sweet girl) while I finish the blog. We will be off to bed shortly and I hope I can sleep instead of lying awake worrying about visas. I only hope tomorrow will bring the news we want to hear. Three days and we fly!
Cheers

Monday Blues

Woken before six by thunder and lightning. As I got up to let the dogs out the heavens opened. They took one look and went back to bed. I chilled in the lounge with my coffee while watching the rain through the window. It was peaceful listening to the rain drumming down. The dogs were able to go out about half six when the rain stopped.
Hubby left after breakfast to go for his blood tests ready for his final check up on Wednesday. I carried on with cleaning our bedroom in-between doing office queries. While cleaning I picked up a box and took it to sort out. As I put it down I noticed what looked like an insect skeleton on my hand and flicked it off. It landed on the floor and as I looked down at it the thing moved and I realized it was a little scorpion. I was horrified and before I could react it had scuttled under the bed. Diane ran away and refused to come into the room for the rest of the day. Margie popped in for a cup of tea and to pick up a face cream she had ordered from Ali. When she arrived it was bright sunshine and blue sky. By the time she left it had clouded up, thunder was rumbling outside and a light rain started to fall.I went back to the bedroom and very gingerly pulled Hubby’s shoes from under the bed as well as a box he had there. I vacuumed and mopped under there watching for the scorpion but never spotted it at all. I hope it went up the vacuum cleaner and is not lurking in there somewhere.
At lunch time there was still no notification of the Oz visas so I phoned the High Commission in Pretoria, only to be informed they needed some information regarding Travis. I was most upset and annoyed as they had not let us know but waited until I phoned to query it. I sent the info through and hope it will be OK. This setback really upset me and I could hardly concentrate on anything for the rest of the day. Panic is starting to set in!Hubby came home about five and sorted out his magazines – his sorting out is putting it in a different place. He is unbelievable! When he buys a magazine he thinks it means keep it for the rest of your life. My magazines are recycled regularly; in fact I don’t bother buying so many now as I never seem to find the time to finish reading them.We have had supper, I have organized my desk with all I must do tomorrow and the blog is ready for posting. All that’s left to do is clean the kitchen and have our Milo.
Cheers

Weekender

On Friday morning while Hubby and I were outside chilling, chatting and drinking coffee we received a phone call letting us know that the BMW was gone. The friend who took the car had been hijacked on Thursday evening and the BMW had been taken. The poor guy had been held up at gun point and forced out the car before being hit on the head with the gun. We felt terrible about it and it put quite a damper on the morning. I felt really sorry for him but also a bit relieved that something like that hadn’t happened while I was driving it. We will have to be really vigilant when we drive the Bakkie around. Things like this make me feel paranoid when I am out and about. After Hubby left I did a few chores and helped Ali with Travis who seemed to be feeling a lot better. Late morning Diane and I went up the road to Margie. We walked up to get some exercise and as it is uphill all the way we were rather hot when we arrived. We chilled by the pool with ice water. Margie and I chatted while Diane had a swim and sunbathed. She wants some colour on that bod before going to Oz.The weather was lovely and sunny and we soon moved into the shade. Diane had another swim just before we left so that she would stay cool on the walk home. Downhill this time luckily. The afternoon was spent having a nap to recuperate from the hot walk, after which I played with Travis while Ali got ready for her weekend. They left at four and Diane and I went to the shop for milk before having our wine under the trees. While we were out we stopped at a friend who looks after dogs for people who are away but unfortunately she doesn’t do it any longer.Hubby got back about six with the bakkie and went to shower and rest as his feet were rather painful. I gave him his supper which he finished as the guy who had borrowed the moby jack returned it and stayed chatting for an hour or so. I cleaned the kitchen and watched TV in-between doing my crossword puzzle. There was thunder and lightning around but no rain.
Saturday we were up as usual having our chill time outside. Hubby made us a breakfast of bacon and egg which we ate under the trees after which I phoned another friend about looking after the dogs. She is away at the same time and the two other people she knows are busy with house sitting at that time. I did a couple of loads of washing before Diane and I popped into Meyerton. I needed to renew Hubbys prescription of his everyday medication. I counted the days and the medicine will last till the day after we get back. Thank goodness! One less thing to worry about. I also got the dogs monthly tablets against ticks and fleas. We stopped at the library to check about house sitters but no luck. Trevor up the road has said he will sleep here but we still need someone to feed the dogs. A friend has said his son will housesit and feed the animals if we can’t get anyone. We stopped at the supermarket and got Rotis for lunch. After lunch we all had a nap. When I surfaced the sky was black and thunder was rumbling in the distance. I watched TV before making us all coffee. A light rain started when I put supper on. Hubby’s sister-in-law and her daughter popped in for a quick visit on their way home from a wedding at the Vaal. They wanted to say bye before we leave but we will be seeing them next week as Margaret is looking after Diane’s fish while we are away. After supper I quickly cleaned the kitchen before we watched TV. We watched Step Brothers which was hilarious. We had our Milo before going to bed.
On Sunday the dogs woke me before six to go out. I wasn’t too pleased as our sleep had been constantly interrupted thanks to the dogs next door who didn’t want to shut up. Hubby actually got up about three to go and shout at them. Hubby was up already watching TV as his legs were paining and he couldn’t sleep. I let the dogs out and went back to bed. I got up at seven and had my coffee outside. It was a lovely morning with the sun shining in a clear blue sky. I really needed my chill time today. Hubby had already made himself breakfast as he knew Diane and I were going into Alberton to meet Pauline. I washed towels and then I took the curtains down in our bedroom and put them to wash so that I could hang them out before leaving. We left for Alberton at about 9.40am and arrived as Pauline got there and met at the Coffee Shop. Pauline and I had a scrambled egg and salmon breakfast with coffee while Diane had a vegetarian breakfast and hot chocolate. We had a good morning chilling over our meal and afterwards wandered around the shops. While we were eating I received an sms telling me that Trevor is unable to house sit. Wonderful! We said bye to each other and after doing some gift shopping Diane and I left for home. Hubby phoned as we were on the way out to ask me to get him a Roti again as he had enjoyed his one yesterday so much. Our afternoon was spent packing our suitcases ready for Oz. We made a list of what is still needed as we packed so we don’t forget things. Once that was done I carried on cleaning our bedroom. Hubby has stacks of magazines and books and I told him to clear them away so I could clean. When we cleaned the bookshelves in the passage we had one shelf at the bottom with nothing on it as we had got rid of books not worth keeping. I was furious when I caught Hubby putting his stuff there as I knew he hadn’t bothered dusting them first. I told him I would rather throw them away then put dirty books on the shelf. I mean REALLY! If we can do it so can he. Hubby made supper while I carried on cleaning. I cleaned just the one section as the other part has the TV and I didn’t want to interrupt his nightly viewing. I will do the rest tomorrow when he isn’t here to rescue any junk that needs to be tossed. At least this is the last room to be cleaned and all will be done before we leave. Diane is busy making the Milo now and then we can post the blog. Can’t believe it! Just One Week Till We Leave. I hope we can sort out the house sitter soon.Cheers ! Hope you have a good week.

Two Good Days

Wednesday
Up early as usual. It was overcast and chilly so Hubby and I had our morning chat and coffee inside. The ground was very wet after yesterdays rain and Digby got very muddy when out for his morning ablutions. I was relieved that I had made an appointment at the Grooming Parlour for him. I fed them early and we had an early breakfast. Hubby left for the workshop and I sorted out the kitchen and gardener before getting ready to take Digby. When Diane and I left to take him it was raining and visibility was poor. We drove slowly and got there at nine – just in time as the dogs must be there between eight and nine. The Parlour had been getting phone calls cancelling appointments because the weather was so miserable and cold so were happy I had still come. After dropping him off we headed for Meyerton to do a few errands. Before we got there Ali phoned to say she was at the plot so we detoured and went home instead. Both her and Travis were home for the rest of the week as they were sick. Diane and I had a coffee and did some computer work before going into Meyerton. First stop was the post office and then we went off to see a friend. The friend wasn’t there so we left a message and decided to stop at KFC for some lunch. We got lunch and then made for the Parlour to fetch Digby. It was half eleven and as they said he would be ready at twelve we drove slowly so that we wouldn’t be too early. We arrived at 11.45am to find him waiting for us. He was thrilled to see me and coming home in the car he lay on my lap resting his head against my shoulder. He looked so lovely and white (not muddy brown). When we got back Digby’s first stop was the bed where he rolled around a bit before making himself comfortable. Ali and Travis had their lunch then they both dosed up and went to sleep. The weather still wasn’t very pleasant so Diane and I decided to have a rest too. By two the weather had improved so I got on the computer and did some banking and sorted out some queries.Travis was very miserable and tired so Ali fed him and put him to bed at half four. She also dosed herself up and joined him. They slept through until the next day.Diane and I had our glass of wine outside and then I made supper. We watched our usual CSI and NCIS having our Milo of course after which we went to bed.
Thursday
Up early before the alarm went off as the dogs were up wanting their biscuits. Hubby and I had our morning coffee and chat outside as the weather was good. Ali and Travis surfaced and as she had washing to hang out gave me Travis. He was a bit miserable so I asked Hubby to make me a second cup of coffee and to bring a banana for Travis (Ali said he was not interested in his milk). I had my coffee while Travis ate two bananas. Hubby made himself toast and disappeared to eat it in front of the TV. I made oats and Travis and I polished it off. He was in a better mood after eating so well. Hubby left for the workshop and Ali took Travis. I checked emails and then started cleaning. There wasn’t too much to do as most of the spring cleaning is done. I just dusted, vacuumed and mopped. I fed the gardener and then Diane and I left for Alberton. We reached town just after one. First stop was the traffic department to pay a fine for Ali (she was driving while using her cellphone).Next was the tax office to hand in my paye form. We then went into Alberton City to find out about enabling my cellphone for Oz. The advice was not to bother as the costs will be ridiculous so we went looking for tekkies instead. I found a comfortable pair and then as we were feeling thirsty we stopped at Wimpy for a coffee. We also had a bite to eat – apple crumble and ice-cream for me and malva pudding for Diane. It was nearly three now so we left for the workshop via the court Prosecutor. Ali hadn’t put her license disc on her car and had got fined while in a parking area. I took the fine and proof of the license to him and luckily the fine was cancelled. She’s lucky she is sick otherwise I would have made her sort these things out herself. When we got to the workshop I handed out wage envelopes and checked on a few things there before leaving to go do some shopping. We went to the Lemon Tree Centre where I stocked up on groceries. I also bought an extra tea to take to Oz (I drink Green Rooibos and Lemongrass during the day and I’m sure they don’t have it there). As we were right next to Tremonti’s it would have been rude not to stop there. We each had three scoops of ice-cream.When we got back we unloaded the car and I put a chicken flattie into the oven. Hubby arrived home with the moby-jack as a friend was coming to borrow it. Him, Ali and Travis went to the garage to put petrol in the car. The friend arrived for the moby and stopped for a chat. Hubby arrived back and showed him how to operate the moby and they chatted for another half hour. After he left we had tea and then I finished supper. Hubby and Ali went on a neighbourhood watch patrol while Diane and I had a Milo and watched CSI. While I have been doing the blog Diane has been watching a movie – I can hear it is very funny as she keeps laughing. We will post the blog and then I’m off to bath and go to bed.The bakkie is at the workshop getting a gearlock installed so as soon as it is back we will put a pic up.
Cheers

Tuesday

Woke up early and lay awhile waiting for the alarm to go off. Got up to let the dogs out. As I put the kettle on Hubby’s phone rang. He took his call and as he was now awake came to join me for our early morning chill outside. It was a pleasant morning and we sat for nearly an hour. I had my second coffee before seeing to the dogs. Hubby made himself breakfast while I was feeding the dogs.
I woke Diane with a cup of coffee and asked her to take a pic of my BMW before Hubby left with it. She took the pics and went back to bed to drink her coffee. Hubby left in the BMW and I did my blog quickly. Diane came to help post it and couldn’t believe it was only 7.30am. We had a Milo and then I got on with Office work – my petty cash. We checked emails and I sent off a couple of emails.
At half ten we checked the site for the visas but nothing yet, hope they come soon. I had an sms from Margie up the road inviting us for a swim. I phoned and told her we were off to the hairdresser and would stop there on our way back. Diane and I quickly went to see if we could get appointments at the same place as Ali had been. The Salon has only recently opened so still not too busy yet and we were able to get haircuts immediately. We were both very happy with the results. As we left the Salon we noticed the sky was rather black.
By the time we got to our off ramp it was pouring with rain. Obviously we couldn’t stop for a swim so we headed home. When we reached the gate it was a cloud burst so we sat in the car waiting for the rain to ease off. We didn’t have umbrellas in the car and most certainly couldn’t get our hair wet. Suddenly there was a flash of lightning followed by thunder. Oh No! We had left the computer on. Diane grabbed her towel, put it over her head and jumped out to open the gate. I quickly drove in and leaving the car in the driveway rushed inside. Luckily my hair wasn’t too wet and Diane’s towel had protected hers. We quickly switched the computer off.
I sent Margie a message to say we would pop up when the rain stopped. I did some more office work – my wages book is written up till the end November and I can do all my returns for Oct and Nov before we leave. Eventually at two we gave up waiting for the rain to stop (though it was not so heavy now) and decided to have a nap. It was still raining at half three and I sorted out a couple of queries I had. By four it was bright sunshine and we quickly went in to Meyerton to get some ointment for Hubby’s foot.
When we got back Diane and I had a glass of wine, inside as the chairs outside were sopping wet. Hubby had phoned to say he was on his way home as we were leaving for Meyerton and he was still not home. I tried phoning him a couple of times but had no reply. At six the dogs all started barking, I looked outside and saw lights shining at the gate. Next thing someone was hooting and I thought `what a cheek! Someone is here and too lazy to open the gate’ I went out and realized it was Hubby. He had come home in the `Swap’ and wanted us to go for a test drive. Diane and I rushed out and got in. I drove it to the garage and was thrilled with it.
Hubby’s friend had phoned him to ask him to swap the BMW for a bakkie he had. I was not happy about it until I saw the bakkie. Hubby had taken the BMW in the morning to make the swap. I will miss my BMW especially as I enjoyed being a BMW (Babe Met Wiele) but I Really like the bakkie. The BMW is pictured above and tomorrow when it is light Diane can take a pic of the bakkie and we will put it up tomorrow. When we got back I made supper and then we watched Ghost Whisperer (I would hate to be able to see ghosts) and CSI. I have cleaned the kitchen, Diane is making the Milo and we can now post the blog.
Cheers
